Corpus Christi, TX — The Texas Surf Conservancy recently partnered with the Port of Corpus Christi Authority on a sea grass restoration project in Redfish Bay, where board and staff members volunteered their time and talents—and their boats—to help remedy barren scars from various impacts. Project participants harvested the roots, rhizomes, and leaves of native seagrasses and transplanted the plugs in the waters near Harbor Island.
Our inaugural project addressed one of five permitted sites identified by the Port comprising over 50 acres that have been impacted by anthropogenic activities. This entire voluntary native seagrass replenishment effort covers approximately 13 acres of prospective restoration sites and underscores one of the Port’s seven environmental precepts—habitat protection and enhancement—also a major part of the mission of the Texas Surf Conservancy. Other project team members included participants from Triton Environmental Solutions in Rockport and WaterStreet Restaurants in Corpus Christi.
“The Port of Corpus Christi has been a longstanding sponsor, supporter, and friend to our organization as they recognize the importance of our mission to preserve marine habitats and promote oyster mariculture along the Gulf Coast of Texas,“ shared Brad Lomax, President of the Texas Surf Conservancy. “We’re proud to partner with the Port and their environmental team on this sea grass restoration project and look forward to continuing our great work together.”
The Port of Corpus Christi environmental team plans to conduct volunteer seagrass transplant events within these approved sites at least annually over a period of five years—and the Texas Surf Conservancy is committed to remaining a supportive and active partner in this important coastal restoration project.
